چکیده

Mapping changes in glacier extent from repeat optical satellite data has revealed widespread glacier decline in nearly all regions of the world over the past few decades. While numerous studies have documented the changes of the outlet glaciers of the Northern and Southern Patagonia Icefields (NPI/SPI), information about glacier changes in the Patagonian Andes (to the north of the NPI) is much scarcer. Here we present an assessment of area changes for glaciers mainly located in the Palena district of Chile based on glacier inventories for 1985, 2000 and 2011 that were derived from two consecutive Landsat scenes and a digital elevation model. The analysis revealed a dramatic area decline for the largest glaciers and total area loss of 25% from 1985 to 2011. The lower parts of several larger glaciers (>10 km2) melted completely. Area loss below 1000 m elevation was 50–100% in both periods, and 374 glaciers out of 1664 disappeared. The number of proglacial lakes increased from 223 to 327 and their area expanded by 11.6 km2 (59%) between 1985 and 2011. Seasonal snow persisting at high elevations in the 2011 scene was a major obstacle to glacier delineation, so the obtained area change rate of 1%a1overtheentireperiodisalower− boundestimate.Theobservedclimatetrends(e.g.coolinginPuertoMontt)areincontrasttotheobservedshrinkage. The observed climate trends (e.g. cooling in Puerto Montt) are in contrast to the observed shrinkage.

Modeling past and future surface mass balance of the Northern Patagonia Icefield

Glaciers are strongly retreating and thinning in Patagonia. We present new inferences about the climatic situation and the surface mass balance on the Northern Patagonia Icefield in the past and the future using a combined modeling approach. The simulations are driven by NCAR/NCEP Reanalysis and ECHAM5 data, which were physically downscaled using the Weather Research and Forecasting regional cl...

Retreat of Tropical Glaciers in Colombia and Venezuela from 1984 to 2004 as Measured from ASTER and Landsat Images

Like glaciers throughout the world, tropical glaciers in the northern Andes have retreated during the last century. In this study, the retreat of Andean glaciers in Colombian and Venezuela has been mapped from Landsat and ASTER images acquired between 1984 and 2004. Glacier retreat has been mapped for three glaciated regions in Columbia, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Sierra Nevada del C...

Recent retreat of major outlet glaciers on Novaya Zemlya, Russian Arctic, influenced by fjord geometry and sea-ice conditions

Substantial ice loss has occurred in the Russian High Arctic during the past decade, predominantly on Novaya Zemlya, yet the region has been studied relatively little. Consequently, the factors forcing mass loss and the relative contribution of ice dynamics versus surface melt are poorly understood. Here we evaluate the influence of atmospheric/oceanic forcing and variations in fjord width on t...

Observations on rock glaciers in the Himalayas and Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan and India

Rock glaciers are abundant in the Lahul and Garhwal Himalayas of northern India and the Karakoram Mountains of northern Pakistan. They exhibit morainic and protalus forms and are restricted altitudinally and climatically to sites above approximately 4000 m asl. and regions where annual precipitation is less than 1000 mm. In these areas, morainic rock glaciers are large, usually )1 km long, )100...

Carbon dioxide glaciers on Mars: Products of recent low obliquity epochs (?)

Three localized sets of small arcuate ridges associated with slopes in the northern polar area of Mars ( 70 N latitude) are morphologically similar to sets of drop moraines left by episodes of advance and retreat of cold-based glaciers. Comparison with other glacial features on Mars shows that these features differ in important aspects from those associated with water–ice flow. Instead, we inte...
